    • None of us has a problem with low self-esteem. Scripture tells us we were born with the opposite issue.
    • The frightening thing about self esteem is the staggering lengths God goes to completely eradicate it from the depths of our souls, in order to produce depth in our souls
    • Brokenness is the gentrification of our hearts
    • My dear American friends, your question just doesn’t scan well over this side of the pond, for this is at long last one ‘problem’ that we Brits just don’t have.” Maybe it’s because my British context means that coming into contact with skeptics is simply unavoidable (given their sheer numbers) and necessary (given our small numbers) in our need to evangelize to survive. Maybe
    • First, we must recognize that the priorities we make are often related to our gifting and callings, and that our calling as a pastor/teacher will probably mean a strategic redrawing behind the front lines in order to help the body of Christ to self-grow and to build up and out.
    • Second, we need to recognize that gospel ministers will be always engaging with skeptics week by week
    • There are some Christians I know who seem to thrive more in the company of unbelievers than believers. I think this is often the mark of one gifted as an evangelist:
    • I know that sometimes I surely mistake strategic withdrawal with the relative comfort and control that living exclusively in the Christian bubble offers
    • I would want us to be persuaded that our overall ministry will be enhanced rather than hindered by us making time to spend with skeptics. Apologetics is not only about defending the gospel of hope to unbelievers by removing their distortions and false assurances. It is also defending the same gospel of hope to believers, protecting, assuring, and strengthening them—keeping them from the same idols that enslave unbelievers (1 Jn 5:21).
    • Not only do we need to teach our congregations that these kinds of relationships and involvements are to be prioritized and not neglected (for their sakes as well as the non-Christian), but we also need to be freed up to pursue such relationships. However, as one pastor friend said to me, “Many pastors I know have become so dependent on being needed, and so have trained their people to depend on them, that passing off counseling, meetings, etc., is impossible.” This same friend is now church-planting . . . from scratch! Can we break, or maybe better, can we share these responsibilities and so create some space to engage in new relationships, thus helping to produce at the same time both more shepherds and more fishermen?
    • Most of them are under the age of forty, and none of them want to be labelled. They don’t want to identify themselves as Baptist or Presbyterian or Calvinist or conservative. They just want to be known as Bible-believing Christians.
    • This is the age of individualism and self-sufficiency. What has surprised me is how, despite our anti-label culture, the term evangelical is still one that is so commonly contended for and shared by so many anti-labellers.
    • Circular reasoning is not the same as a circular argument.
    • Is it possible to posit any truth at all without that truth having its genesis and its impetus from God’s creating and sustaining activity? If not, then every truth presupposes that God is, that he is the Creator of all that is, and that he sustains it.
    • I have never denied that there is a common ground of knowledge between the believer and the unbeliever.
    • Van Til follows the Reformed scholastics here. Natural theology cannot be a prologue to revealed theology without giving way to a rationalistic theology.
    • What if we argued for Christianity based, not on probability, with its attendant problems, but on the certainty that Scripture provides?
    • It’s therefore all the more surprising to find him repeating the “begging the question” charge, for once one understands the nature of a transcendental argument it’s clear that no fallacy of petitio principii is being advocated or committed.
    • The problem here is that Dr. Copan, like many critics of presuppositionalism (and even some of its would-be defenders), confuses a presupposition of an argument with a premise of an argument. There’s a significant sense in which the argument above does indeed presuppose the existence of God. For if the first premise is true, the existence of God is a necessary precondition of rational thought, and the possibility of rational thought is a presupposition of all argumentation, including TAG. So in an obvious sense, if TAG is sound then TAG presupposes the existence of God (and so does the cosmological argument, the teleological argument, the moral argument, and every other theistic argument). But this is not at all to imply that the existence of God functions as a premise in the argument.
    • As someone once quipped, whereas Descartes argued, “I think, therefore I am,” Van Til argued something far more profound: “I think, therefore I AM.” (If you don’t get it, review Exodus 3:14!)
    • If Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) is not telling these gospel truths, if instead it’s telling listeners that they’re “special” and everything’s going to be okay, but without saying anything about the incredibly high price God has paid to make them His own special possession, or what He’s done to conquer the power of sin and death, and what He will do in returning to free us from the very presence of sin and evil, then it’s not wholesome, positive, safe for the whole family, or helpful.

       

      It’s lying and pointing us away from Christ—the only source of Hope and Salvation for all mankind. It is preaching a false gospel that doesn’t talk about Jesus—who He really is and what He’s really done.

    • It is our sincere hope that Muslims will know we present this with true love in our hearts for them, and in the hope that they will see their need for Christ’s work, and will submit in repentance and faith to His lordship.”
